It took several years before I was bold
enough to add four small words to my leaflets but in
1986 I added in small print “free if no seals”.
In
1996 I was investigated by the Office of Fair Trading
who had been told I had plastic seals planted on the
rocks so that I would never need to pay out. The newspaper
article is here. The story was
turned into a Hamish Macbeth
episode which led to plenty more papers and magazines
picking up on the story.
The McCalmans, the well known Scottish folk group,
wrote a lovely tune called ‘Seals or Your Money
Back’ on a CD entitled ‘Where the Sky Meets
the Sea’. The group perform at concerts all over
the world and they tell the story about the plastic
seals. If you ever get the chance to hear them live
you should do so.
Guarantee
To see seals or any wild life in their natural environment
cannot be guaranteed because that is nature at its very
best. But for over 25 years now I have been running
trips from my home village of Plockton and I am confident
of finding seals somewhere. However we have had some
trips when we don’t see any so it is ‘free
if no seals’. Fares are only collected
after you are happy you have seen the seals.
I can’t be fairer than that, can I?
PS The free trips don’t happen
very often. |
